Road Scholar (week long) Class: Coastal Basketry and Barrier Island Ecology >>>>>>>>>
at Chincoteague Bay Field Station
with Pamela Zimmerman

We have a wonderful time coiling baskets! We use pine needles, and grasses we collect locally. Beginning basketry, no experience required, but if you are an experienced learner, alternative techniques will be offered, like lids, handles, sculptural forms. We learn about the Barrier Islands, and their ecology, through a series of presentations and field trips, including one to Wallops Island, where we collect native grasses to include in our baskets! Our trip to Wallops includes a private beach walk and shell collection. We also visit the Chincoteague National Refuge, and often see ponies up close and personal. If available, we climb the lighthouse!

The CBFS facilties are perfect for our needs. Dormitories are simple and clean. Each Road Scholar session is treated to a traditional seafood boil, with whatever seafood is in season. Yum!
